Hiram Conibear was born in 1871 and lived until 1917. He was a foundational coach for the University of Washington's Rowing program. He invented a unique style of rowing that impacted the sport on a national and global scale for years after it's intoduction. He brought the first Varsity crew to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta 1913, a regatta that tday is still considered the premier collegiate race. Today, over 100 years later, Washington has one of the best all time records for total wins of National Championship titles at the IRA regatta.
